Job Description

The Senior Director of R&D Engineering supporting our Advanced Surgical business will manage and direct specialized engineers working on programs to meet organizational needs and to capitalize on new products. This position will rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. The Senior Director will be familiar with a variety of the mechanical / biomedical engineering field's concepts, practices, and procedures. This role will use a wide degree of creativity and have a strong grasp of good design principles and a passion for instilling them in the team. The role will report directly to the BU President and will have roughly 5 direct reports but will oversee a broader team of roughly 50 in the R&D department.

This is not a remote position and is based in Denver, Colorado.

This position has the opportunity to be leveled up for the right experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Management:

  • Identifies resources needed and assigns individual responsibilities.
  • Reviews deliverables prepared by team before passing to management.
  • Effectively applies our methodology and enforces project standards.
  • Prepares for engagement reviews and quality assurance procedures.
  • Minimizes the exposure and risk on project.
  • Ensures project documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately.
  • Tracks and reports team hours and project expenses.
  • Directs personnel activities of department, such as recruitment, hiring, performance evaluations, and salary adjustments.
  • May direct field testing of products and systems performed by field staff.
  • Responsible for the coordination and completion of projects; sets deadlines, assigns responsibilities, and monitors and summarizes progress of project.
  • Coordinates department activities, with your team, to design new products, modify existing designs, improve production techniques, and develop test procedures.

Communication:

  • Facilitates team and business meetings effectively.
  • Holds regular status meetings with project team.
  • Keeps project team well informed of changes within the organization and general corporate news.
  • Effectively communicates relevant project information to superiors.
  • Delivers engaging, informative, well-organized presentations.
  • Resolves and/or escalates issues as appropriate.
  • Understands how to facilitate communicate difficult/sensitive information.

Leadership:

  • Provides technical leadership to ensure design, verification and validation of each product and its components are appropriate for approval and manufacturing. Collaborate closely with all functional areas necessary to aggressively advance products from proof-of-concept through validation and product launch. This includes sustaining projects.

Teamwork:

  • Consistently acknowledges and appreciates each team member's contributions and motivates team to work together in the most efficient manner.
  • Keeps track of lessons learned and shares those lessons with team members.
  • Mitigates team conflict and clarifies communication between members.
  • Confers with management, production, and marketing staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products.


Internal Operations:

  • Suggests areas for improvement in internal processes along with possible solutions.
  • Leads internal teams/task forces.
  • Complies with and helps to enforce standard policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes technology trends, human resource needs, and market demand to plan projects.
  • Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests.
  • Coordinates activities of engineering department to design, manufacture, and test mechanical components, products, and complex systems.

Required:

  • Four year degree minimum in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Eight years experience in an R&D management capacity with product development or equivalent experience.

Strongly Preferred:

  • Medical Device experience
  • Knowledge of medical device requirements (Class I-II), design controls, risk assessments, and the 510k process
  • Proven track record in managing large teams
  • Ability to foster a strong working relationship with both internal and external customers
  • Proven track record of developing and launching successful products
  • Ability to work cross-functionally across the organization
  • International and Domestic expected travel: 20% - 40%
  • Disclosure as required byapplicablelaw, the annual salary range for this position is 120,000 to 250,000. The actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, education and skill level. The salary range is CONMED's good faith belief at the time of this posting.
