POSITION SUMMARY

A Trainee Patroller will learn the mountain and equipment functions of Ski Patrol, and help with providing effective care and transport of injured, sick, and lost guests. They will learn to patrol the mountain for our guests' safety and skiing enjoyment, and maintain good public relations. The Trainee Patroller will require careful supervision and instruction on all assignments, and will consistently follow all Winter Park policies and procedures, all applicable laws (federal, state, and local), and all health and sanitation codes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Learn to assist in the extrication, care, and transportation of traumatic and medical patients.
  • When at Patrol Headquarters be prepared to respond quickly to any incident on the mountain.
  • Learn to perform morning trail checks, helping to mark unmarked obstacles, adjust padding, put out signage.
  • Carry out instructions from dispatcher, senior and master patrollers.
  • Training as indicated by the Ski Patrol Manager.
  • Assist in general mountain safety work (tower pads, bamboo, rope, race closure, traffic control, etc.).
  • Assist in patrolling special events, such as speed and technical racing.
  • Learn to fill out incident reports.
  • Learn how to conduct an accident investigation.
  • Learn all the facets of Ski Patrol safety education programs.
  • Maintain personal ski equipment in good condition.
  • While skiing, a patroller will be under control and observe mountain safety rules as an example to the public.
  • Maintan excellent guest servies standards--being informative, understanding, and tactful, but firm when education is needed.
  • Perform trail sweep to close the mountain and clear all trails of the public, providing assistance as necessary.
  • Assist in dispatching and all related activities.
  • Assist base patrol coordinator and learn all related activities.
  • Assist in search and rescue for lost guests, sometimes after hours.
  • Learn lift evacuation techniques.
  • Learn to assist in avalanche control and rescue, as needed.
  • Completion of Trainee and Basic New Patroller training checklist.
  • Report unsafe conditions regarding equipment and area of work, or elsewhere on the area.
  • Maintain Winter Park cleanliness standards.
  • Perform other duties as directed by Manager or Director.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education:
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Outdoor Emergency Care (120 hours)
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer

Experience:
  • Successful completion of Winter Park Ski Patrol Assessment Clinic.


Qualifications and Skills:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be an expert skier (3 to 5 years).
  • Must be able to use alpine or telemark equipment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is five days per week and may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Mountain Environment:
  • The primary physical environment in which this position works is out of doors with a high exposure level to cold, snow, wind, rain, bugs, sun, high altitude, extreme heights, lightning, etc...
  • The degree of strenuous activity within the job is considered to be high. Often lifting a weight of 60 pounds throughout the day is common.
  • Additional strenuous physical activity may include skiing, walking or hiking upon uneven, challenging terrain with heavy tools or equipment.
  • Exposure to: Chemicals required for cleaning, de-greasing, and painting. Ultra Violet radiation from the sun enhanced through lack of atmospheric filtration at work altitude. Fumes produced in activities ranging from cleaning to painting. Noise generated by snowmobiles, lift equipment, and tools may require hearing and eye protection to be worn.
  • Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and other employees.
  • Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
  • Helmets worn at all times when skiing or driving snowmobiles

WAGE:

The base hourly pay range below represents the low and high end of Winter Park Resorts hourly pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to experience, education, training, location, merit system, quantity or quality of production, responsibilities, and regular and/or necessary travel. The range listed is just one component of Winter Park Resorts total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include many region-specific benefits.

Hourly pay range: $18-$20.
