What you'll do

We are looking for an exceptional attorney who is experienced in drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts and providing day-to-day business and legal advice to support our growing legal department at Viasat's headquarters in Carlsbad, California.


The day-to-day

In this role, you will support our Aviation Business Unit, which consists of our commercial aviation business unit and safety of flight business unit. You will work autonomously to represent Viasat in all aspects of negotiating sophisticated commercial agreements with airline and business customers as well as our suppliers. This position will also coordinate and work closely with other subject matter experts of the company's legal team, including our compliance experts and privacy and data experts. International travel may be required.


What you'll need

  • 5+ years of corporate legal experience, of which 2+ years at a large national law firm.
  • 1-3 years of in-house legal experience.
  • J.D. and member of the bar in good standing.
  • U.S. citizenship required.

What will help you on the job

Extensive Experience in Contract Drafting and Negotiations, and Industry Experience

  • Excellent and demonstrated contract drafting and negotiating skills, particularly with respect to complex contracts that involve equipment sales and delivery of services that typically utilize SLAs.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) aviation industry, (2) telecommunications industry, or (3) satellite industry.

Problem-Solver

  • Strong business acumen, with an ability to understand and analyze legal, operational, and business risks.
  • Strong analytical skills and judgment necessary to problem-solve and advise internal stakeholders on legal and business risks - and the written and verbal skills to effectively communicate the reasoning in recommending solutions.
  • Solutions-oriented, with excellent problem-solving abilities and judgment.
  • Able to provide creative and practical legal and business advice.
  • Able to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the business, including the ability to reduce complex issues to simple communication.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective, professional, and collaborative relationships among diverse stakeholders, both within the Aviation Business Unit and across the company, at all levels.
  • Ability to balance the interests of the business that secures the programs and protects Viasat from unnecessary risks.
  • Ability to demonstrate the existence of emotional intelligence in challenging situations.
  • Team player with a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and accepting of input and direction from others.
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously, overcome challenges and defuse conflict.

Salary range

$178,000.00 - $309,600.00 / annually
