Medical Assistant
The Medical Assistant performs clerical duties and medical assistance in support of public health care and treatment at Arapahoe County Public Health clinics.
Lead Medical Assistant
The Lead Medical Assistant serves as a liaison between the Clinic Supervisor and the Medical Assistant staff. Duties include those of a Medical Assistant plus providing training, oversight, and leadership responsibilities.

The county anticipates hiring this position only as a Medical Assistant. This position is eligible but not guaranteed for possible career progression in the future as outlined below:

Note:

  • The full salary range for the Medical Assistant is $18.60 to $27.89 per hour.
  • The full salary range for the Lead Medical Assistant is $20.47 to $30.68 per hour.
Duties

Medical Assistance:

  • Prepares and maintains clinic area and lab, cleans, sanitizes, and stocks clinic area, cleans and sterilizes medical instruments, monitors and performs autoclave sterilization testing daily.
  • Interacts with patients and clients to obtain client medical and social histories, prepares and maintains patient charts as per established protocol and procedures, reviews records for completeness and information accuracy, and records purpose of patient visit.
  • Takes patient's vital signs, height and weight measurements, performs lab tests as specified, and prepares specimens for transport to outside labs, obtains bodily fluid samples, records complete and accurate results.
  • Assists nurse practitioner and physician in patient exams and procedures.
  • Dispenses oral contraceptives and transdermal patch orders as per protocol, administers intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intranasal injections of prescribed immunizations or contraceptives for patients of all ages, places PPD Skin Tests per appropriate competencies.
  • Maintains clinical lab book through recording daily lab procedures conducted, obtaining and tracking lab reports, recording clinic stats, and assisting with lab bill procedures.
  • Provides counseling and educational information related to proactive health management, substance addiction or abuse, immunizations, medical testing and procedures, family planning, and women's health issues per the appropriate information and educational sheets.
  • Provides educational information related to routine child and adult immunizations including common side effects, appropriate aftercare instructions, and adverse reactions per Vaccine Information Sheets.

Administrative Support:

  • Schedules patients for various lab procedures, makes referral appointment for patients, and assists patients in finding appropriate care.
  • Performs routine clerical and reception work to support clinic activities, including assisting patients, answering phones, providing accurate information, maintaining records, and entering patient data into an electronic records system.
  • Conducts quarterly audits of clinic charts, as per state and public health requirements.
  • Maintains inventory of clinic and pharmacy supplies. Orders and stock supplies. Maintains knowledge about current practice guidelines and continuing education topics pertinent to the Medical Assistant role.
  • Provides helpful, accurate, and direct assistance to internal and external customers via phone and in-person. Helps with interpretation within the clinic if bilingual.
Lead Medical Assistant only:
Lead Administration
  • Plans and oversee snew Medical Assistant (MA) employee department orientation and training for new staff, students, and interns. Oversight of training for current MA's as well as planning continuing education.
  • Coordinates and collaborate in developing procedures and processes throughout the clinics as it relates to front desk and back office. Teach and monitor duties of both front MA and back MA, as guided by the Clinic Supervisors.
  • Develops, maintains, and implements front desk manual and MA manual.
  • Updates and maintains lab protocols with Clinic Supervisor/Coordinator oversight. Follow-up and record updates to rectify deficiencies noted in quarterly lab audits.
  • Provides regular feedback to Clinic Supervisors/Coordinator about staff and clinic needs, error reports, and corrections.
  • Plans and coordinates support staff meetings with Clinic Supervisor/Coordinator input. Record and maintain meeting notes meetings on the Nursing Drive.
  • Participates in planning meetings with program Supervisor/Coordinator/Manager representing support staff's collaborative needs and best interests.
  • Participates in conducting quarterly audits of clinic charts per state and public health requirements, and QA/QI projects.

Emergency Preparedness and Response:
  • Responds, as required, to support public health emergencies, incidents, and events. Employee participates in all exercises and drills on emergency preparedness and response, as required. Completes trainings identified as appropriate for this level employee and initiates corrective actions and responses pursuant to Federal, State, and Local laws, statutes, and regulations.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant training program accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medication Association in collaboration with the American Association of Medical Assistants (AMA-AAMA)
  • Active CPR certification
  • Experience performing medical assistant related duties
  • Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
Lead Medical Assistant only:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent

Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is generally confined to a clinical environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
