Overview
Northern Illinois University (NIU) College of Law invites applications for an opening for an Assistant Clinical Professor of Law who will serve as Director of our Business Law Innovation Clinic. NIU Law is a public law school. It resides at the heart of a diverse and active university campus of over 17,000 students in DeKalb, Illinois, located on the western edge of the Chicago metropolitan area. NIU College of Law invites applications for an opening for an Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, who will direct and supervise our Business Law Innovation Clinic, which opened in Fall of 2022. The position is a joint hire with the University's College of Business. The ideal start date will be October 1, 2024, to begin preparations for the Fall 2024 semester but may be later if circumstances warrant.

The Business Law Innovation Clinic provides legal assistance to not-for-profit organizations, entrepreneurs and small business owners from underrepresented communities in Dekalb and surrounding communities in Illinois. The Clinic advises students from the NIU College of Business on business formation matters and represents clients with transactional business law issues.

Position Summary
The Clinical Assistant Professor and Director will teach a law clinic seminar course each semester, will supervise clinic students, and will also work in partnership with the College of Business to develop and deliver programming that meets the demand of the marketplace.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Directs and supervises Business Law Innovation Clinic.
  • Teaches a law clinic seminar course each semester and for one summer school session.
  • Directly supervises the legal work of clinic students.
  • Advises and represents clients with transactional business law matters including entity formation and incorporation, applications for Business Enterprise Certifications, and with other business law matters commensurate with the faculty member's experience and expertise.
  • Advises and represents clients with formation of non-profit organizations, with applications for federal income tax exemption, and with other matters commensurate with the faculty member's experience and expertise.
  • Works in partnership with the College of Business to develop and deliver programming, including possibly teaching a summer course in the College of Business and/or creating content for revenue-generating workshops hosted by the College of Business.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships between the University and its surrounding communities by engaging in outreach and leading educational workshops and presentations.
  • Participates in development and fundraising activities for the Business Law Innovation Clinic, including seeking new funding sources, writing grant applications, and promoting the Business Law Innovation Clinic widely.
  • Provides service to the College of Law, the University, and the community through active participation in committees and through professional activities related to bar associations and/or legal education.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school;
  • At least three years of significant experience in the practice of business law.
  • Admission to the practice of law and good standing in at least one state or the District of Columbia;
  • Ability to be admitted to the practice of law in the State of Illinois within a reasonable time;
