Position primarily supports TVA Coal, Gas, and Hydro generating facilities located in NW Tennessee and western Kentucky and as such, prefer someone to live in that area (e.g. Nashville / Clarksville / Paducah / Bowling Green / Murfreesboro / similar). Approximately 50% of travel will be required, including day trips and overnight trips.

JOB SUMMARY:

  1. Develops, implements, and maintains selected programs for balance-of-plant (BOP) structural equipment/systems to ensure the safety of personnel, compliance with codes and regulations, reliability, efficiency, and long-term asset management. Has primary responsibility for governance and oversight, and some responsibility for execution and support of selected programs. Is responsible for establishing and maintaining all PO procedures, processes, design standards, maintenance instructions, program health criteria, asset health criteria, and other documents for the selected programs such as bunkers/silos, cooling towers, railroads, chimneys/stacks, ponds/containments, etc.
  2. Supports, as needed, civil engineering work (calculations, drawings, inspections, recommendations, reports, etc.) to optimize reliability and performance of BOP components, structures, systems and processes at TVA coal, gas, & hydro plants. Ensures fleet wide replication of solutions and standardization as appropriate.
  3. Performs studies to evaluate the effects of modifications, deterioration, deletions, and additions to civil BOP components and systems.
  4. Assists plant and corporate personnel in resolution of unusual structural component and/or system problems as requested. Performs troubleshooting/root cause analysis of unusual problems not resolved by routine maintenance.
  5. May plan, develop, coordinate, review, commission, lead and/or direct the performance of projects/programs of moderate scope or parts of major projects/programs. May be responsible for the business as well as the technical aspects of the entire project/program. Business responsibilities include, but are not limited to, budget, schedule, cost analysis and forecasting, work planning, monitoring, and controlling expenditures, and change management. Leads a team including all engineering disciplines, project controls, engineering consultants, the constructor, production, and others performing work on or supporting the project. Ensures that valid requirements are identified and satisfied, assists in the approval process, approves project change requests within approved project limits, ensures that configuration management, start-up and turnover are conducted satisfactorily and conducts lessons learned reviews at project completion/program implementation.
  6. May possess and use specialized knowledge and expertise in one or more areas of civil engineering, serving as PO's Subject Matter Expert (SME) for selected components, structures and/or systems.

SUPERVISON RECEIVED:

Independently performs most assignments with instructions as to general results expected. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems. Supervision may be provided by a higher-level engineer or by the first-line manager.


SKILLS AND PROFICIENCIES:

  • Full competence in civil engineering and some knowledge of other engineering disciplines.
  • Problem solving & analysis: Root Cause, FMEA/EMEA, Weibull, Lean Six Sigma, etc.
  • Knowledgeable of plant operations and maintenance (equipment, systems, processes, procedures, etc.)
  • Strong communication (written & oral) and interpersonal skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from an accredited curriculum.
  • Full competence as a System Engineer as demonstrated by several years' experience as a System Engineer or Civil Engineer. Must have demonstrated proficiency in engineering as evidenced by completion of Engineering Graduate Progression Plan or equivalent post engineering graduate education and experience.
  • Experience with civil components/structures/systems, and governing standards/requirements (ASCE, AISC, ACI, etc.)
  • A professional engineering license and membership in a professional engineering society is desirable.
  • Must be able and willing to assume "on-call" rotational assignments which may include 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week availability. Must be able and willing to travel to plant locations as required.
  • Utility industry preferred (coal, hydro, gas, nuclear)
  • Power plant experience preferred.
  • 50% travel required.
  • Onsite position
